This legal pad may not look like much, but it is actually a delightful behind-the-scenes artifact from Late Night with David Letterman. Painter Joseph Konopka has worked as a scenic artist at NBC for many years, including 1982-1993 when he worked for Letterman’s show, where his duties included “paint[ing] wing on set for Dave’s Sentiment Shoppe” (Sept. 26); making “wings for cow” (Oct. 1); and “wash[ing] floor in studio (from cows day before)” (Oct. 2). It’s hard out there for a scenic artist.
Joseph Konopka work diary for the Late Night with David Letterman show, 1990 Apr. 26 - 1992 Jan. 16. Joseph Konopka papers, 1965-2003, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.
